NORTH: THEIR ABNORMAL QUEST FOR POWER

Posted On : December 5th, 2010 | Updated On : May 24th, 2012

The way Jonathan emerged as president despite the wicked opposition by those who think it is their birth right to rule Nigeria forever, shows that the hand of God is in it. Flash back to the time of Yar Adua’s sickness and the disgraceful manner his northern brethrens handled it, portraying the man as a northern president eventually. They even denied Jonathan the right to see his boss during the period of his sickness. Plot after plot was hatched to deny Jonathan his right as a enshrined in the constitution to take over the mantle of leadership since the president is presently incapacitated. Surprisingly, the speaker of the house of Reps. Demeji Bankole from the South West was reported to have teamed up with a group of shameless individual from the North West to scuttle a noble plan by the congress to do the right thing, that is elevating Jonathan as the Acting President. But it was like fighting against God, the plan failed.

You may ask why they are afraid of losing power. Why the desperateness? Comments like “As long as Yar Adua still has breath in him, he will never resign” was repeatedly made. This is to avoid a situation where Jonathan, a Southerner will have a full hold on power. This type of comment will show you that these people are really desperate. The answer to our earlier question is simple; they make a living on power. Without it, they are like fish out of water. They have gotten used to being allocated grade A ministries as their right and other juicy appointments in the Petroleum sector, Customs etc. where a lot of money is being made.

What has Nigeria gained from their hold on power for these forty years? Mismanagement, corruption, nepotism, religious crisis, wrong policies etc which have gone a long way in retarding the economic and political development of the country. A feverish campaign to stop Jonathan from exercising his right to contest in 2011 is on, the arrogant manner they are using threats to advise Jonathan not to contest, that it is still their turn, shows that they are still living in the past. What turn are they talking about? Nigeria belongs to all of us. Jonathan can contest just like any other Nigerian. it is for the Nigerian people to choose who they like. Nobody has the right to stop him. I will advise the northern elite to do something useful with their time than trying to heat up the polity anytime they dont get their way like children denied of their favourite toy. Jonathan has a very short time, it is important we dont distract him from doing something good with it.

Jonathan has promised us that our votes will count this time around and that he will fight corruption. Nigerians will hold him to his words and if he does what he says he will do, Nigerians will vote for him to continue. God has intervened in Nigerian affair, no cabal or region can hold us to ransom again. These threats from some of these northerners must be ignored because they will be the ones to regret if they do anything untoward to bring to reality the American prediction of Nigerias demise as a United Nation and we all say God forbid.
