The University teachers that are suppose to know better is not helping the matter by their selfish approach to the issue. Their incessant strike actions are only succeeding in disrupting academic flow that a four year program most times stretches to eight years. They lack the moral strength to carry out a strike to its logical conclusion. Their rage is easily broken by the unfeeling Government through threats of mass sack, monetary inducement plus playing the ethnic card. The latter know that these teachers are lacking in honor and integrity. They are only interested in the enhancement of their pay, not the total turnaround for the better of our educational system.
The Nigerian Intellectuals have failed to acknowledge the enormous power they have as a pressure group to force the hand of government and entrench a permanent solution to education. They have instead limited themselves to a narrow goal of salary increment. One is not altogether shocked about this narrow pursuit for one is aware of their moral bankruptcy. They are lazy intellectuals only good at lifting materials from already published books, mass producing same and selling to their students. They even bring out the bully in them by making it compulsory to purchase these printed materials. The perverts among them are fixed on the female students giving out pass marks for sex.
A strike that is supposed to be a powerful instrument to force change by force is being made to look childish and unserious. All the past strike action in our educational system what has it achieved, nothing. If we must have a strike again in our educational system we must not narrow it to lectures welfare alone. It should be an all embracing action aimed solely at fixing the rot in education from primary to university level. Something all stakeholders can identify with.
This strike should be powerful enough to bring to a halt education at all levels private inclusive, forcing government to declare a state of emergency in the educational system. We should have a three year interruption of all educational activities in the county. During this period of zero learning government must inject serious funds to revamp all educational infrastructures. Allocation to education during this three year interrupt must be a whopping 30% of money made from crude oil sales every year for three years after which it will be permanent 15%. A ban of private schools for 15 years must be instituted and it will be made a crime for any government official to have a child schooling abroad. For those of you who consider this drastic, that is what is needed. We are creating a generation of non competitive kids in a global world filled with well educated kids from Japan, China, and United States.
We cannot as a country continue to deceive ourselves. Education is too important an issue to be toyed with by any country desirous of economic growth. Education plays a significant role in determining our countries competitive advantage. The collection of skilled and educated people in a country will forever determine how successful economically we will ever be. What we are now producing as a graduate are half baked, they cannot compete with their mates in the world. Let us suffer now by funding education and enjoy latter. It is time to stop the rot.
