Nigeria: Constitutional Amendment to Include State Police ---State Governors Differ

Posted On : September 2nd, 2012 | Updated On : September 2nd, 2012

Governors from the Northern part of the country strongly oppose having state police as part of the New Amendments in the constitution.

Their opposition, based on their fear that it will weaken the unity of the country is rather childish and myopic. Their stand has tended to divide the governor’s forum, since their southern counterparts are supporting the proposal to include state police as part of the new amendment to the constitution. Their support for the proposal is not without strong reason; the enormity of our security situation plus the inefficiency of the Federal police makes their case very appealing.

There is need to amend the constitution allowing the governors have practical control of security in their domains. The idea of calling a governor a chief security officer and not giving him any constitutional backing to control the police is laughable. A localized police will make for a better understanding of their terrain of operation.

Security is not something to be toyed with; it affects investor’s confidence in any country.
